Student life in Canada is among the top globally. Over 642,000 international students enroll in post-secondary institutions every year. In order to do so, they must obtain a study permit issued by the Canadian government. This permit allows students to study in Canada for a specific period of time, and typically indicates the educational institution they are attending and course of study.

Program eligibility

You can study in Canada if you:

  • are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • prove you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and also return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
  • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

Note: Depending on the program you are in, you may be eligible to work in Canada while you study, and also after completion of your studies. Spouses/Common-law partners of foreign students can also work in Canada while their spouse is studying. The spouse can apply for an Open Work Permit which allows them to work in any job without restriction.
